Smart Ports: Intelligent Monitoring and Maintenance of Aids to Navigation

Smart Ports are being discussed globally, having the potential to support regional growth, supply chain resiliency and enable wider innovation across transport and logistics. Following The Connected Places Catapult report for the Department for Transport on the Ports of the Future we’ve worked in collaboration with Port of Milford Haven to define a clear smart ports use case in ‘Intelligent Monitoring and Maintenance of Aids to Navigation’.

Milford Haven smart port use case focuses on intelligent monitoring and maintenance of aids to navigation. Like most ports, Milford Haven is required to maintain and protect their harbour. Part of this effort is in the provision of aids to navigation, such as beacons and buoys.

These assets are often in remote locations, exposed to harsh sea conditions. This makes inspection and maintenance activity both risky for the operators and presents planning challenges when considering tidal and weather conditions. In addition to the risks and challenges associated with remote asset inspection in hazardous environments, unplanned downtime due to maintenance issues can cause a significant impact to safety and operations.

To address this challenge, we have defined an integrated solution leveraging the power of IoT technology and analytical techniques to deploy remote condition monitoring and predictive analytics of hard to reach, critical assets. This capability would work towards ensuring faster response times to failures and a more predictable availability of assets providing safe navigation around some of the UK’s most critical infrastructure, our ports.
