Connected Places Catapult provides tailored support and channels funding to promising SMEs, enabling them to scale innovative technologies that make transport operations safer.
This impact case study is a deep dive into how the Catapult has helped an SME called Rhevia to trial its radar and AI technology, delivering insights and improving safety on roads and in workplaces.
Through timely advice, programme funding, industry connections and product refinement, the Catapult supported Rhevia to develop from TRL 1 to a fully operational technology (TRL 9) in less than two years.
● Through the TRIG programme, Rhevia partnered with the highways authority in Southend-on-Sea for 17 deployments. In the private sector, Rhevia’s technology has been installed at Nestle’s York factory, and talks are under way to install more sensors at the site.
● Since connecting with the Catapult less than two years ago, Rhevia has expanded from a single founder to a seven-person business.
● In April 2025, Rhevia received investment from Bethnal
Green Ventures, an early-stage ‘tech for good’ capital firm.
Rhevia is a start-up with a mission to make transport and operations safer, more efficient, and more responsive.
Rhevia is working with local authorities and private companies, combining radar data and AI technology to understand how people and vehicles move through complex environments. Their technology processes movement data, alongside contextual information like the weather, lighting and bus schedules, allowing clients to identify the root causes of danger. Rhevia’s technology provides evidence for decision makers to justify investments and prioritise safer road layouts and environments.
To support their business, we provided the following:
The Catapult has supported Rhevia through multiple programmes which allowed the company to increase the Technology Readiness Level of its product.
The Catapult connected Rhevia with Southend-on-Sea City Council, Portsmouth International Port, and other partners through the TRIG and Freight Innovation Fund programmes. This has enabled Rhevia to trial and improve its technology and secure clients.
In 2025, Rhevia showcased its solution at the Connected Places Summit and was nominated for the Department for Transport’s Chief Scientific Adviser’s Award for Inspirational Leadership.
