Building climate resilience together: Reducing the impact of disasters

Discover how cross-sector collaboration and digital innovation can safeguard communities from the rising threats of extreme weather and infrastructure failures.

The devastating floods that recently hit the UK and Europe are a stark reminder that we must urgently strengthen climate resilience in our critical infrastructure. As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, technologies that model and predict their impacts are no longer optional; they are essential.

The power of a connected approach

We need a system that allows local authorities, infrastructure operators, emergency responders, and national governments to see the full picture: interconnected risks and vulnerabilities across utilities, transport networks, and other critical infrastructure.

The Climate Resilience Demonstrator (CReDo) harnesses the power of a connected digital twin platform, a digital replica of real-world infrastructure, to give asset owners the insights they need to prepare for extreme weather. By integrating data from energy, water, telecoms and transport, CReDo helps organisations to:

  • identify vulnerabilities
  • predict how assets will perform under stress
  • coordinate proactive responses

Real-world impact

During extreme flooding, for example, energy providers can pinpoint where to prioritise maintenance and safeguard substations. This collaboration extends to telecoms, ensuring critical communication services remain operational. The result? Communities can depend on essential services when they need them most.

In our webinar, experts from Anglian Water, UK Power Networks, and BT explored CReDo’s potential. Alanna Gluck, Delivery and Engagement Manager at Connected Places Catapult, and James Daniel, Innovation Project Manager at UK Power Networks, shared some highlights.

"Incorporating data from other infrastructure networks and utilities within existing systems will significantly enrich our insights, leading to better outcomes. To unlock the full potential of CReDo, we need more asset owners to get involved and collaborate effectively."
Richard Buckingham, Climate Change and Carbon Manager at Anglian Water

A vision for resilience

Collaboration is at the heart of climate resilience. By uniting sectors and regions, organisations can generate actionable insights to inform smarter investments and create infrastructure that withstands future threats. A secure, shared data environment is key to unlocking this potential.

Justine Webster, Climate Specialist, Asset, Risk & Measures, Networks at BT Group emphasises how collaboration with CReDo can prioritise the restoration of critical telecoms infrastructure during extreme events. It ensures continued access to essential services, including emergency calls and government alerts during unplanned power outages.

"CReDo offers the opportunity to scale up, with asset owners, government bodies, and regulators adopting a single solution. This can foster partnerships and mutual benefits through cross-sector collaboration in planning, response, and recovery."
