Zero Emission Road Freight

In 2019, Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) were responsible for 16% of UK domestic transport greenhouse gas emissions. To meet Net Zero commitments by 2050, these emissions need to be reduced to zero over the coming decades. Although this will be challenging, innovative battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and Electric Road Systems (ERS) solutions are emerging as potential zero-emission solutions for the sector.

These technologies were explored in Connected Places Catapult’s Transition to Zero Emission Transport (TranZET) project, which helped secure the first tranche of funding of £20 million to explore rolling out large-scale trials of zero-emission HGVs in the UK. Building on this work, we are currently supporting the DfT as part of the Government’s Zero Emissions Road Freight Trials (ZERFT) programme. Our role is to provide a set of enabling services to ensure robust foundations for a successful multi-year ZERFT programme, ensuring we identify and tackle barriers and maximise the benefits from the trials.
