Project Summary

Inclutech has developed a system called ‘Safe Travels’ to combat criminal and disruptive behaviour on public transport. It offers passengers and staff the ability to discreetly make a non-verbal report, receive a prompt response, and for photo and video evidence to be collected and shared. The system is designed around inclusivity and accessibility to accommodate a diverse range of users. It could additionally be integrated seamlessly with existing systems, and enable data-driven decision-making to allow targeted safety measures to be introduced.

Project Achievements

The project successfully progressed from TRL 2 to TRL 3, delivering a validated Minimal Viable Product (MVP) of a non-verbal incident reporting platform aimed at improving public transport safety and inclusivity. Key achievements include stakeholder engagement with operators like Translink, Lothian buses, and Govia Thameslink Railway and in-depth user research. The team conducted public surveys, site visits, and design reviews to tailor the platform for real-world use. Notably, the project produced valuable safety insights, highlighted integration challenges, and refined system features based on feedback from transport staff. These outcomes position the project for pilot trials and further development.

Conclusions

The project validated the feasibility and relevance of a non-verbal reporting tool to address anti-social behaviour in public transport. The MVP was well received by stakeholders, affirming the need for an inclusive, digital solution that enhances incident reporting for vulnerable passengers. While challenges included late-stage stakeholder onboarding and departmental silos, the team adapted effectively, learning valuable lessons in stakeholder management and inclusive design. The project contributed significantly to sector knowledge through research, stakeholder insights, and a replicable methodology. The TRIG programme was instrumental in accelerating the project’s development and shaping future strategic direction.

Next Steps

Next, the project aims to move from TRL 3 to TRL 4-5, with usability testing, pilot deployments, and deeper integration into transport systems. Collaborations with accessibility groups (e.g., RNID, IMTAC) and academic partners will ensure inclusive design  improvements. Future development includes enhancing AI-driven analytics, multimedia reporting, and system interoperability. The team is seeking further funding to support scalability and commercialisation. We are delighted to share that we have been selected for the upcoming Transport for Wales Accelerator where we will have the opportunity to test integration and further refine the
product.
