Project Summary
This project aims to develop and test novel prototype in-cab system to substantially reduce fuel consumption of heavy goods vehicles through advanced longitudinal control strategies.
Project Achievements
The initial in-cab prototype system was completed in February 2020. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was not possible to complete the remaining systems, and install and test them during real operations. As an alternative that could be completed and distributed, a prototype Android app for smart coasting was developed. The system can be easily shared with operators and drivers to install and use regardless of the conditions and regulations surrounding Covid-19.
Conclusions
A coasting application was developed during this project, enabling fleet operators to analyse coasting opportunities without relying on intensive in-field training, and trial and error to identify the optimial coasting point. In addition, a prototype Android app for smart coasting was developed, which can be installed and operated by lorry drivers.
