Project Summary
JET Connectivity is further developing its 5G position, navigation and timing solutions to help shipping and maritime industries determine accurate positional information at sea, alongside the provision of high bandwidth communication. Its solution is focused on increasing resilience on GPS and satellite communications, while reducing errors and potential positioning spoofing risks; removing single point failure and reliance within current GPS and satellite technologies. This solution will deliver assured position, navigation and timing across maritime and associated on-shore operations and transport, to ensure improved safety, certainty and
efficient operation.
Project Achievements
JET Connectivity’s project advances a cutting-edge 5G Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT)solution designed to enhance maritime transport safety and efficiency. Leveraging ensembled clocks integrated with 5G network nodes, the system delivers precise, resilient PNT data without relying solely on GPS. By mitigating vulnerabilities such as spoofing and jamming, the solution ensures reliable navigation for autonomy, shipping and port operations, supporting both maritime and onshore activities. This statement related to spoofing and jamming is related to the GPS not our solution. This innovative approach not only improves operational certainty and communication bandwidth but also paves the way for future autonomous maritime systems, contributing to decarbonisation and sustainable transport within the UK’s critical maritime sector globally. This approach doesn’t rely on other non-GPS approaches, as technology such as eLoran is in the early stages and also not available globally.
Conclusions
In conclusion, our innovative 5G PNT technology solution stands as a powerful and impactful solution, poised to redefine maritime navigation and safety. By harnessing the precision of ensembled clocks alongside robust 5G connectivity, this technology overcomes the inherent limitations of traditional GPS, ensuring unrivalled accuracy and resilience against disruptions such as spoofing and jamming. Its proven potential not only enhances navigational reliability across maritime and onshore environments but also drives significant improvements in operational efficiency, safety, and decarbonisation. Ultimately, this breakthrough solution is set to transform the transport ecosystem, catalysing economic growth and establishing a new benchmark for sustainable innovation. Moving forward, our next steps will focus on deepening collaboration with key stakeholders and leveraging the expertise of national institutions.
Next Steps
We plan to establish future projects with dedicated working groups and advisory panels to integrate stakeholder insights, ensuring our technology meets industry needs and regulatory standards. In parallel, our ongoing collaborations with NPL will be enhanced to provide rigorous testing, calibration, and validation of our 5G PNT solution. This collaborative approach will not only accelerate
technology refinement and market readiness but also cement our commitment to developing a robust, future-proof solution for maritime and onshore navigation challenges. This impactful project would not be possible without the support of the Department for Transport, the expert guidance of Connected Places Catapult, and the invaluable opportunities provided by the TRIG programme.
