Matthew Brewster is the Director of Estates at London Metropolitan University, a Certified Member of IWFM and Chartered Construction Manager. With over 30 years experience, including 18 in the Higher Education sector, his current remit includes facilities, hospitality and events, sports, property management, capital development and corporate health and safety across a 100,000 m2 multi-site London campus serving 15,000 students. In his present role he has implemented a culture change programme within his department, developing a High Performing Team and driving improvements including increased customer satisfaction, statutory compliance and significant operational and system efficiencies, with associated reductions in costs. Matthew took on a senior leadership role during the pandemic, leading the institutional response amid the rapidly changing external environment, delivering the safest campus in London and facilitating conditions in which the university increased income and student satisfaction against sector trends. As COVID-19 restrictions eased, Matthew implemented new hybrid working practices across the University in just 3 months. Matthew is currently delivering on his £200m, 10-year Estates Strategy, having achieved approval in 2022. The Strategy will transform and modernise the entire estate and deliver carbon net zero for the university by 2031. In his spare time, Matthew enjoys cinema, long country walks in his adopted county of Hertfordshire, and is seeking to regain his black belt in karate after a 30-year break from the sport.
