REPORT

The Future of Communications as an Enabler at Ports

Shipping ports are our gateway to international markets, handing 95% of UK imports and exports. Electronic communications have become a fundamental enabler for the evolution of modern port operations.

Aimed at UK port stakeholders and the communications technology sector, the report explores the challenges and needs of the port sector and the opportunities for addressing them. Though doing so the piece aims to:

  1. 1. Help ports capitalise on their potential though the effective adoption of communications technology
  2. 2. Guide the communications technology sector toward opportunities in the port sector

The report provides an overview of port operations, covering the key stakeholders, and technical systems. The challenges and opportunities for data communications at ports are considered through a use-case approach. The four priority use cases comprise: Data connectivity and capacity; good monitoring and management; automation of equipment; and cyber security. Each use-case considers:

  • The Challenges: What are the relevant barriers, difficulties and needs experienced by port stakeholders.
  • The Enablers: How and what can help overcome the challenges including opportunities for introducing emerging technology solutions.

The report was guided by insights gained through engagement with industry stakeholders through workshops and meetings. Connected Places Catapult hope the report will catalyse further discussions and help guide our future work within the Maritime and Ports ecosystem, for example, to explore how data communications can be employed to improve workforce wellbeing and job satisfaction.
