Many people find rail travel stressful and difficult to navigate, especially those with anxiety and non-visible disabilities. In the UK, an estimated 4.5 million people avoid rail travel because stations and disruptions can feel overwhelming. At Bristol Temple Meads Station alone, staff identified over 200 anxious passengers each week who needed extra support.
Through the Station Innovation Zone, Journey Alerts were able to trial their app-free digital support service. Using WhatsApp, SMS, and QR codes placed around the station, passengers could access real-time, personalised journey guidance before, during, and after their trip.
The trial showed a reduction in travel anxiety, increased passenger confidence, and demonstrated how low-cost digital tools can improve accessibility while supporting frontline staff.
