As aviation works towards net zero, airports need practical evidence to understand how low-carbon technologies perform in operational environments.
Building on the UK’s pioneering Zero Carbon Turn programme, the Winter Operations HyGPU Project tested a hydrogen dual-fuel Ground Power Unit (HyGPU) during cold weather and in both daylight and low-light conditions.
The trial demonstrated safe and effective operation under representative winter airport conditions while generating operational data and further strengthening the evidence base to help airports, regulators, and industry better understand the potential role of hydrogen-powered ground support equipment (GSE) in future decarbonisation strategies.
The project was delivered by Exeter Airport, Cranfield University, and ULEMCo, with funding and support from Innovate UK through Connected Places Catapult and regulatory oversight from the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
