The Department for Transport (DfT), in collaboration with Connected Places Catapult, recognises the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of the UK’s transport system. The Government has recently announced a consultation to allow the creation of an Integrated National Transport Strategy which will set out a 'people first approach' to getting people around the country.

Transport is a large and complex system, and its improvement is inevitably a complex challenge. Advances in AI mean that there are exciting new opportunities to further digitalise this system with innovative AI-driven solutions that can drive efficiency, enhance sustainability, and ensure that people and passenger experience are at the heart of all future transport decisions.

25 innovators to develop AI proposals for UK transport

25 organisations have been selected to develop use case proposals that focus on how AI can enhance the passenger experience of transport in the UK.

The AI in Transport Enhancing Passenger Experience Programme encouraged innovators across the UK to apply to an open call competition submitting their ideas for how AI can revolutionise the way people travel – with the aim of delivering faster, cleaner, and more affordable journeys that positively benefit passengers in the UK. The programme is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Connected Places Catapult.

A total of 25 small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were selected to develop use case proposals that embed responsible AI into the UK’s transport systems, with the potential for real-world applications that improve transport in the UK.

The 25 organisations can be found here.

A “Dragon’s Den” pitch day then took place at DfT's offices providing 10 of these organisations the opportunity to pitch directly to senior transport stakeholders resulting in 3 being awarded follow-on funding to develop their proposals into a full business case.
