West Midlands Logistics & Distribution Cluster – Board Member opportunity

Applications close 3 January 2025

Connected Places Catapult and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) are launching the West Midlands Logistics & Distribution Cluster, designed to drive innovation and growth in the region’s logistics and distribution sectors.

The aims of this cluster are in line with the vision set out in the West Midlands’ economic strategy – through the existing Plan for Growth and emerging Local Growth Plan. The cluster aims to leverage investment, create more high paying jobs, upskill the existing workforce, reduce unemployment, and foster an innovate approach to tackling issues faced across the wider industry and ecosystem development.

We’re now seeking expressions of interest from organisations keen to join the Cluster Board and shape its strategic direction.

Why join the Advisory Board?

The Advisory Board will play a pivotal role in shaping the cluster’s strategic direction, fostering collaboration, and championing innovation across the sector. Acting as an intermediary between cluster members, policymakers, and key stakeholders, the board will ensure alignment with regional and national priorities while addressing the needs of the logistics and distribution sector.

As a board member, you will:

  • Represent the diverse voices of the West Midlands logistics and distribution sector.
  • Champion the sector’s economic advantages and its role in growing the regional economy.
  • Steer cluster activities toward commercially viable and investment-ready innovation.
  • Ensure inclusivity, diversity and accessibility across all initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Cluster Lead to shape initiatives and foster impactful partnerships.

Cluster focus areas

The cluster will address key economic priorities in the West Midlands:

  • Transport modes: From HGVs and vans to rail freight, aircraft, and ships
  • Transport infrastructure: The backbone enabling logistics and distribution
  • Warehousing & Freight management: Efficient storage and delivery processes

Cross-cutting themes include:

  • Skills provision
  • Talent attraction and retention
  • Innovation and R&D, including decarbonisation.
  • International trade and foreign direct investment (FDI).
  • Digitalisation and operational optimisation.
