Cohort announced for Local Authority Transport Decarbonisation accelerator

Innovators with new technology will help local areas to address their place-based net zero commitments, with support from Connected Places Catapult.

Six specialist companies have been welcomed onto the Local Authority Transport Decarbonisation accelerator; a six-month programme designed to trial disruptive new innovations aimed at reducing transport emissions.

Connected Places Catapult will assist the small to medium sized companies (SMEs) by providing a bespoke programme of commercial support.

It has teamed up with two local authorities and a sub-national transport body to deliver three place-based challenges, with a pair of SMEs selected to work with each partner.

The first challenge is ‘Decarbonisation of refuse collection vehicles’ on behalf of Adur & Worthing Councils, which is looking for innovative solutions that could help electrify a fleet of 30 internal combustion engine vehicles.

Challenge two is ‘Incentivising the transition of taxis to electric vehicles’ in association with Cardiff Council, which is looking for new ways to help improve take-up of electric taxis in the city.

The third challenge is ‘Understanding the impact of local transport policy changes’ and is being run on behalf of England’s Economic Heartland, which is keen to trial innovative solutions to better understand how policy affects resident’s transport choices.

“We are delighted to welcome six firms onto our Local Authority Transport Decarbonisation accelerator, which promises to help innovators showcase their new ideas and our programme partners to see how technology can help them to decarbonise their operations.”
Connected Places Catapult’s Executive Director, SME Development & Academic Engagement, Alex Weedon
