25 innovators to develop AI proposals for UK transport

The AI in Transport Enhancing Passenger Experience Competition seeks to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can revolutionise the way people travel – with the aim of delivering faster, cleaner, and more affordable journeys that positively benefit passengers in the UK. The programme is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Connected Places Catapult.
In the first phase of the programme, 25 small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been selected to develop use case proposals that embed responsible AI into the UK’s transport systems, with the potential for real-world applications that improve transport in the UK. These selected SMEs have been refining their AI-driven proposals, working closely with experts and industry stakeholders.
Each of the 25 selected organisation are developing proposals that align with at least one of the government’s core transport priorities:
- Improving Performance on the Railways and Driving Forward Rail Reform
- Enhancing Bus Services and Increasing Usage Nationwide
- Transforming Infrastructure to Promote Social Mobility and Tackle Regional Inequality
- Delivering Greener Transport
- Better Integrating Transport Networks
The companies selected are:
Better Environment And Transport (Beat) Ltd.
Integrated Systems Engineering Ltd
Passenger Technology Group Limited
Powerup Off-Grid Services Limited
Z Mobility Ltd
Following a review of the 25 proposals, a pitching day at the DfT's Offices will give 10 of these organisations the opportunity to pitch directly to senior transport stakeholders. Ultimately, three will be selected for follow-on funding to develop their proposals into a full business case.
The companies selected to go on to develop full business cases will be announced at the Connected Places Summit (19-20 March).
