In the transition to zero emission road freight, battery electric HGVs are anticipated to play a dominant role in the sector. The safety of vehicles, infrastructure, and people is paramount, and there are still significant learnings required to identify best practice.

Due to the expected scale of eHGV adoption, battery fires have the potential to present the greatest threat to the safety of the sector. Incidents within the passenger EV sector have shown that vehicle battery fires can produce substantial temperatures and burn for days without the ability to extinguish. Careful considerations are therefore required within the design and development of charging sites for eHGVs, both at private depots and in the public domain.

Connected Places Catapult commissioned Syselek, supported by BEAT, to investigate the battery fire risks and hazards for eHGVs, and the outcome report has identified potential control measures that can mitigate against catastrophic incidents.

Join us in this webinar to discuss the findings from the upcoming report, including proposed control measures and considerations for charging station designers and developers.

Why attend?

The session will cover the following key areas:

  • The background to battery fires, and how the risks may impact the operation of zero emission heavy goods vehicles as the sector transitions.
  • Emerging control measures, including rationale and mitigation strategies to inform eHGV charging site design.
  • A case study will be presented to demonstrate how risk assessments may influence design decisions for charging stations.

The session will provide opportunity to ask questions and speak to the team behind the investigation.
