The global view of smart city strategies

Cities around the world are creating and deploying smart city strategies. It is time to take stock and review what is happening worldwide.

We’ve shed light on the latest smart city research and what smart city strategies mean in practice, and how they differ across the world. Our report, A Global Review of Smart City Strategies gives city leaders the knowledge, tools and confidence to create a strategy that is right for their city.

Our global research programme is conducting smart city research and interviews through investigating cities from vastly different geographies and societies. Our ambition is to look under the skin of the smart city narrative in these cities, to understand how cities are making progress on the ground, and how their context affects the steps they need to take.

Our first report, produced in collaboration with Arup, was published in 2017 and is available to download. To produce this report we interviewed officials in twenty cities and brought together researchers, officials and experts in three events including at Smart City Expo. With this publication, we will give city leaders insights into how they can begin their smart city journey.

In this report you will find:

Recommendations for how you can create a better smart city strategy for your city.

An introduction to smart cities and their history;

A review of how cities are making and implementing smart city strategies, with case studies;

Cover of the report "Smart City Strategies: A Global Review 2017" by Catapult Future Cities, featuring illustrations of urban landscapes, technological icons, and a partial globe.
