Project Summary

Motocargo trialled the L150 electric cargo motorcycle designed for rural delivery operations. With a 100‑mile battery range and 150kg load capacity, it was tested across varied terrain, from urban Hereford to remote rural routes. Seven test cases simulated real‑world logistics models, supported by 3,000 miles of live deliveries. The trial compared the prototype with vans, e‑vans, e‑bikes and petrol motorcycles to assess performance, cost efficiency and rider acceptance.

Project Achievements

The L150 demonstrated potential to replace up to 50% of under‑utilised rural delivery vehicles. Cost analysis showed substantial savings per mile across all vehicle comparisons, while users found the motorcycle easy to operate with stable handling. The project identified potential carbon savings of up to 10 tonnes of CO₂e annually per vehicle and generated £1.94 in social value per £1 invested.

Conclusions

The trial showed that the Motocargo L150 has strong potential as a low‑emission alternative to vans for rural logistics. Testing confirmed its suitability for longer rural routes and varied terrain while offering lower emissions and operating costs. Engagement with operators and local partners highlighted opportunities to improve last‑mile delivery, reduce barriers to employment, and support rural businesses.

Next Steps

Motocargo will seek public and private investment to progress from prototype to commercial production. Further research and development will focus on rider comfort, load security and vehicle design refinements. The company also plans to engage with policymakers and local authorities to address regulatory barriers and build the infrastructure needed to support wider adoption of electric cargo motorcycles in rural areas.
