Project Summary

Mobilityways tested a multi‑technology system to detect and incentivise shared car journeys for NHS staff. Tools included LiDAR‑based occupancy detection, CommuteJournal and CommuteBoost in the Mobilityways app, and variable message signs. The trial evaluated whether validated occupancy data could support incentives such as discounted parking, encouraging behaviour change. Baseline travel surveys and app analytics were used to understand travel patterns and redesign interventions.

Project Achievements

The project engaged 490 staff in baseline surveys and saw 4,600 join the CommuteIQ platform. Liftshare membership grew, 12,000 car miles were saved, and 2,600 kg of CO₂ avoided. Social value equalled £4.07 per £1 invested.

Conclusions

The IVORA trial demonstrated that AI‑enabled technologies can accurately detect vehicle occupancy and support incentives for lift‑sharing in rural employment settings. The project delivered measurable reductions in car use, supported the introduction of new bus services, and generated significant social and environmental value. Employers and local authorities were able to use the data to better understand travel behaviour and plan more efficient, people‑focused transport solutions.

Next Steps

Mobilityways will continue commercialising the technologies tested through IVORA, including occupancy detection, app‑based incentives and transport insights for employers and councils. Further trials are planned to test performance on public roads, alongside wider rollout to new clients. The company will build on existing demand to scale adoption across rural workplaces and transport authorities nationwide.
