Project Summary
Intelligen developed the solar‑powered powerPOD—an off‑grid, fire‑resistant Light Electric Vehicle charging and storage unit made from 90% recycled materials. The trial planned installation across three sites in The Broads, including accessible units. Delays in planning approval meant installations were not completed, but the process generated significant design revisions, stakeholder consultation, and community engagement through the “Riding on Sunshine” campaign. The project aimed to address the lack of secure LEV charging in rural areas and increase low‑carbon travel options.
Project Achievements
New commercial contracts were secured. Engagement activities reached 750 people, and social value equalled £3.99 per £1 invested. Surveys showed strong support for installations near railway stations and attractions, and highlighted the importance of secure storage for LEVs.
Conclusions
The trial confirmed strong stakeholder support for the PowerPOD as an off‑grid charging solution for light electric vehicles in rural and environmentally sensitive locations. Although planning delays limited live usage during the trial period, the project delivered substantial design improvements and validated the technical and commercial potential of the solution. Engagement with local authorities, businesses and cycling groups highlighted demand for reliable charging infrastructure to support green tourism and active travel.
Next Steps
Intelligen will complete planned installations across The Broads and progress discussions to expand the network with regional partners. The company will continue developing its charging products and digital platform, including a next‑generation charging unit and user app. Further trials, investment activity and collaboration with industry partners will support scaling across rural and tourism‑focused locations in the UK and beyond.
