Innovation Twins The UK-Australia Opportunity

This report from the Innovation Twins programme has sought to explore and identify routes to place-to-place cooperation between the UK and Australia.

With a rich history of policy exchange, science and innovation cooperation, the UK and Australia have renewed and enhanced bilateral trade and investment via the 2023 Free Trade Agreement. Both countries have strong recognition of the need for cities and regions to drive sustainable economic development at the local level.

Outlining a data-driven approach to matchmaking for city or regional collaborations that offer high-potential partnerships across a wide range of business and innovation sectors, the report aims not to be a prescriptive set of recommendations, but rather a starting point for discussions between British and Australian national, regional and local authority stakeholders.

Surveying a range of potential partners across Australia, from large cities to smaller localities, the report highlights sectoral and innovation ecosystem leadership capabilities across key sectors of mutual national interest, including renewable energy and net zero technologies, urban environments, future mobility, space, agritech, and advanced manufacturing, and how these could be connected to complementary centres of capability in the UK.

The report sets the stage for a robust and productive relationships that can exploit the significant opportunities offered by connecting our shared economic and sustainability goals while fostering innovation and local economic growth. As our economic futures grower even closer through our shared status as Dialogue Partners of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Innovation Twins has the potential to bring a new and exciting methodology of cooperation to our partnership.
