Award win for railway safety innovation

Network Rail and Connected Places Catapult have won a Safety Award for developing a new piece of technology known as ‘geofencing’.

Congratulations to Network Rail and Connected Places Catapult for scooping a joint award at a prestigious industry event last night.

The two companies won the Safety Award at this year’s Railway Industry Association’s Railway Industry Supplier Excellence awards in London, for their collaborative work to take forward a technology called ‘geofencing’.

The technology uses wearable safety devices which alert track workers if they leave a safe work area through a loss of situational awareness. Find out more here.

Three suppliers who were part of the collaboration were Onwave, Tended and Track Tracker.

Awards judges commented that the entry from Network Rail and Connected Places Catapult “was a strong, powerful entry with impactful supporting evidence”.

“Keeping the workforce safe is of paramount importance. That’s why Connected Places Catapult is really proud of its involvement in this Network Rail funded project. It is a great example of the challenge-led approach delivering the benefits of digital technology.”
Connected Places Catapult’s Ecosystem Director for Rail & Stations, Alan Peters
“It’s been a very rewarding experience to contribute to this collaboration and bring innovative technologies to the rail industry. I’m delighted to know that rail workers will have an additional ‘tap on the shoulder’ if they lose situational awareness.”
