Call for SME collaborators – SBRI: modernising energy data access and information

We are launching a SME Research Initiative for two separate submissions to the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) ‘Modernising Energy Data Access and Information’ competition.

The competition aims to solve the fundamental problem of exchanging digital energy information between energy organisations and with other stakeholders by supporting the development of products or services which can later be commercialised and employed to solve similar problems elsewhere.

About the competition

This competition is funded by Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, in collaboration with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem). It is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition.

Up to £1.9 million is available for projects which will accelerate the development of tools and processes to modernise data services for the energy sector.

In this first phase applicants can apply for a share of up to £480,000 for modernising energy data access.  The competition closes: Wednesday 8 January 2020 12:00pm

For the UK to achieve its net-zero emission ambitions, we must further decarbonise our energy supply and demand across heat, power and transport. Your proposal must demonstrate how you can achieve an efficient exchange of information in a way that minimises the technical burden of the solution and provides an effective user experience. Solutions must meet the needs of people within the energy sector and those from other sectors, so that they can more easily deliver products and services.

The challenge will be delivered in three phases. Successful applicants in each stage will be eligible to apply for subsequent phases.

Collaborate with the Connected Places Catapult

Connected Places Catapult (CPC) is seeking partners for two separate submissions to this call.

Below you can find outlines of three concepts, of which we will be proceeding with two, depending on the interest shown in each of them.

Please respond to any that are of interest to your organisation, clearly stating which concept (1, 2 or 3) you are applying for.

1. GrowthPlanner: Monitoring the impact of planning on electricity networks

We’re looking for an engineering company to help refine and improve our spatial data platform, which forecasts network capacity using infrastructure and planning data.

2. Open Data engineering toolkits

We are seeking partners to carry out a feasibility study on open data engineering toolkits for the energy industry.

3. Open Data Demonstrator

We are seeking partners to carry out a feasibility study around an open data demonstrator for the energy industry. We seek a partner energy system company to act as the focus for this demonstration.

Registering Your Interest

We are undertaking a formal process of selection for interested organisations. All organisations interested in joining the consortium are requested to register their interest by emailing Luciano Falco (luciano.falco@cp.catapult.org.uk) with the following, in total no more than two pages:

  • Two examples of recent, previous work which demonstrates the organisation’s capability in providing the services required within this consortium project. This should include an explanation of the work carried out and the outcomes and achievements of the project (maximum ½ page per example)
  • What the organisation can contribute to the consortium
  • Indication of other organisations that they might like to see form part of the consortium

You will be judged by your experience in this area, understanding of the scope of the call and in your capability as demonstrated in your submission.

Submission of the above information will be considered an expression of your organisation’s interest to join the consortium. All registrations of interest must be submitted by email by 3pm Friday 6th December 2019.  The submissions will be reviewed based on experience, capability and suitability and you will receive a response on the outcome of your submission by Wednesday 11th December 2019.

Please remember to state clearly which concept you are applying for. If more than one, you’ll need to do a separate two-page submission for each concept.
