Purpose of the role

The Lead will be expected to work in collaboration with our Director of Applied Data and Digital Technologies to successfully lead and manage the Data Science team. They will work closely with the Director to help develop and grow the team’s capability, strength and offering. Working alongside other programme leads, and with close alignment especially to the Software Engineering team, they will effectively leverage and utilise the Data Science team to successfully deliver the programme of work to an expected quality. They will provide technical input into new business opportunities such that work is scoped appropriately to ensure quality, strategic fit and feasibility.  The Lead will be expected to stay up to date on latest developments in the field of data science such that state-of-the-art data science techniques and processes are employed to deliver innovative and cutting-edge solutions. They will be ultimately responsible for bringing data science best practice to the design and delivery of new and innovative tools, products and services to the market.

 

Key Responsibilities
  • Line manage the Data Science Team by implementing and enabling organisational policies and procedures, including but not limited to recruitment, learning & development, performance management etc
  • Use your expertise to provide hands-on insight, technical support and input into deliverable work
  • Develop and grow the capacity, skills and service offering of the Data Science Team to match the needs of our project pipeline and operational plan
  • Develop, embed and promote the tools and processes the Data Science Team use to deliver their work effectively and sustainably; working closely with the Software Engineering team Lead for consistency
  • Help scope new project opportunities to ensure quality, strategic fit and feasibility
  • Present on the status of ongoing and forecasted activities, preparing monthly and annual reports to the Director
  • Identify and resolve potential resource conflicts – forecast and recruit future skills needs
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality work, understanding project requirements, coordinating with resources and, where necessary, leading the project in the right direction. It is anticipated that at least 50% of the Team Leader’s time will be allocated to active projects
  • To work with the Director to set the strategy for the Catapults Data Science activities, ensuring strategic aims are aligned and contributing to corporate strategy as required.
  • Be a thought leader in data science domain, playing a driving role in formulating our data vision on current place-based challenges and remain abreast of the place-based data project opportunity landscape
  • Engage with academic research partners and institutions to incorporate in the development and delivery of collaborative activities
  • Actively build external relationships by support our engagement with key companies, researchers and policy makers
  • This role may require some travel and may also require the management of team members across multiple locations
  • You may be required to undertake any other reasonable duties to support the Catapult in achieving its strategic outcomes and ensure effective business operations
Required skills and experience
  • Masters or above in Data Science, Operational Research, Statistics or something equivalently numerate (or equivalent demonstrable experience)
  • Excellent understanding of different methodologies/ approaches across data science, data analytics, data visualisation, machine learning, as well as concepts such as big data, open data, data models, ethics, standards, etc.
  • Background and/or exposure to software engineering and experience working with software engineering teams
  • Good programming skills in multiple, data science or software development relevant languages from Python and R, to Java or JavaScript
  • Significant work experience outside academia, applying data analytics and/or modelling to real-world projects (ideally in commercial environment)
  • Demonstrable experience in business, whether employed or self-employed, in large or small firms; and/or in research, in universities or research organisations. Mixed background is a plus
  • Ability to manage projects and guide a technical team through the design, development, testing and deployment stages reviewing completed work effectively
  • Proven experience managing teams to high-performance, driving team engagement, growing competencies and skills, as well as working with individuals on development plans and career paths
  • Ability to work with limited supervision under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Excellence at managing relations with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels, being persuasive and approachable
